Centennial Events and Donations

September 5th, 2008

Dear CFA Family:

We are well into our eighth month in our centennial year, and we have a lot of exciting news at the College of Fine Arts to share with you. We received our first Centennial Chair donation, and Sen Edgardo Angara met with all the Arts and Humanities colleges of UP to help the colleges with an infrastructure fund which has been very timely to address some immediate repairs and needs of the College.

We are very thankful  to our big-hearted donors, and we hope that there will be others who will follow the same road they have taken in supporting CFA.

August – September 2008 Updates:

1.  Last July, we were very happy to receive the P 1.3M donation of Mrs. Victoria de Santos and her children Tanya and Noel to fund the Tito de Santos Centennial Professorial Chair Donation for CFA. Mr. Tito de Santos is an alumnus of the College of Fine Arts’63 and a member of the Beta Sigma fraternity. This is a very timely and welcome centennial gift for the College as we try to attract and keep young bright and articulate faculty members through professorial chair awards. The last time that the College of Fine Arts received a professorial chair donation was in 1985. CFA is very grateful to the family of Mr. Tito de Santos for this very generous donation.

2. Sen Edgardo Angara has donated to the College of Fine Arts, the amount of P1M (One Million Pesos) for infrastructure repair / or construction. The amount will be used for the 1) construction of a student activity area (P850,000) which has been planned and delayed for the past few months because of the bidding process and the 2) various roofing and repair works around the College. The donation of Sen. Angara also comes at a time when we need to  upgrade and repair our college facilities. Our deepest thanks to Sen. Angara.

3. The UP CFA Alumni Association has also donated more than 20 electric fans and 3 airconditioners to the College. CFA is now completing its electrical rewiring to update and accommodate the expected electrical load. They have also donated some funds to help clean up and repair the bathrooms of CFA.  We would like to thank the UPCFAAA led by President Janice Young, Secretary Mitzi Reyes, Treasurer Ching Abad Santos, and Board members Bim Bacaltos, Benjie Cabangis and Totet de Jesus for looking out for the College.

4. New Ceramic Studio at the College of Fine Arts and  Other Activities

  • UP Chancellor Sergio S. Cao approved a budget at the beginning of the semester to build a brick gas kiln at the premises of CFA as a way of jumpstarting a Ceramic Studio for the use of CFA academic programs and workshops.  The Ceramic Studio is moving full speed ahead with its newly appointed faculty Coordinator and ceramics artist Ms. Rita B. Gudino. We are also very fortunate that Mr. Tom Decker, a visiting ceramic artist and professor from California State University is spending at least six months with CFA on a Fulbright Scholarship to help shape and get the Ceramic Studio off the ground.
  • Please try to catch two ongoing exhibitions of CFA at the National Museum - Forming Lineage: the National Artists in the Visual Arts at UP curated by  Prof Ruben David Defeo and Dr. Patrick Flores, and Transmissions: UP Artists  and the Thirteen Artists Awards  curated by Prof. Leo Abaya at the Main  Gallery of the CCP.
  • If you happen to be in UP, please pass by the UP Theater Lobby where CFA has mounted the “UP Landmarks Sketchbook Exhibition”. A hundred sketches of  architectural landmarks, landscapes and other special UP places from the seven campuses of UP are rendered by well-known alumni artists as a remembrance of student days.
  • Be sure to get a copy of Forming Lineage: the National Artists in the Visual Arts of UP. It features a history of the College and has the most fascinating pictures from old alumni albums. Please call Elma or Joanne at 4688990 or send text message to 09102329824 to order.
  • Usapang Luad is a five-series colloquium on Contemporary Ceramic Art in the Philippines to be held at the CFA Auditorium every Monday starting   September 1 at 2:00pm until Sept 29,2008 . Hope you can come and join the  foremost practitioners in ceramic art in the Philippines “in conversation.”

5. Continuing Education Art Classes.  CFA now offers short art workshops and classes. Please call 4688990 or  09102329824 or visit the CFA admin office to register.

  • Ceramic Workshop by TOM DECKER, Fulbright scholar and visiting professor from California State University. Every Saturday from August 16 to Septmber 20,2008. Time: 2:30-5:30 pm. P4, 500 per person inclusive of clay and firing fees.
